Building Courses with Accessibility in Mind

It is important that we think about accessibility as we are creating our course content, so that we meet the needs of all users who access our course. While you create your content, remember the acronym SILT. Structure, Images/Media, Links and Tables.

      • Structure your content so that it is easily read by a screen reader.
      • Make sure that images and media are correctly captioned or a transcript is provided.
      • Links should not be the full web address, rather they should be descriptive text.
      • Tables need to be correctly captioned and headers applied to rows/columns as necessary.

Canvas Accessibility Checker

Built into the Canvas Rich Content Editor is an accessibility checker. This checker will look at the content you created and ensure it meets some basic accessibility standards. For example, the checker will ensure:

      • Images have Alt Text.
      • There is sufficient color contrast with your text.
      • Tables are being utilized correctly.
