Keeping Mobile Learners in Mind
Students are mobile learners. Whether they are mobile learners because they are always on the go, or if they do not have access to a computer, we need to design Canvas courses with mobility in mind.
With over 1.5 million mobile users and a high of 3.5 million, designing a course to work both on laptops and mobile devices such as smartphones and iPads is extremely important.
When a course is first developed, Canvas reports that more than half of users participate using the Canvas student app. Canvas reports that close to 60% of iOS users and 50% of Android utilize the app during the first week of the course launch and only lose 10% of users by week 5, indicating that students are utilizing the app on a daily basis and instructors should design courses accordingly.
A reason for high Canvas student app usage could also be because both the iOS and Android have high stability. More than 99% of users reported a crash-free experience, a stat that remains consistent.
Access the Mobile Design Checklist
Just like the Course Evaluation Checklist, the Mobile Design Checklist is available in the Canvas Community. Similarly, there is an access section for you to make your own copy of the mobile checklist. We recommend that you make a copy and add it to your Google Drive at this time.
Using the Mobile Design Checklist
There is some overlap between the Course Evaluation Checklist and the Mobile Checklist. If you are already designing for the internet on computers, you have a great head start! The Mobile Checklist follows ratings, and you work through the ratings as you develop your Canvas skills.
