Building Assignments
Canvas supports multiple Assignment submission types: No Submission, On Paper, Online, and External Tool. Online submissions are the most commonly used by instructors and include five types: Text Entry, Website, URL, Student Annotation, Media Recording, and File Upload.
You can manage and grade just about any classroom activity by varying the assignment type and submission options. Below are some examples.
- For lab or other hands-on activities in the classroom or virtually, have students upload pictures or videos taken during the activity.
- For performance-based assessment, create assignments with rubrics to give feedback using SpeedGrader. You can create a video submission OR use a no submission assignment to grade while observing your students performing a skill directly.
- Enable Peer Review settings for rough drafts of papers or final projects to allow students to give and receive feedback on their work from their peers.
- For speeches and presentations, have students upload videos or create a no submission assignment and leverage a Rubric and SpeedGrader to score students as they present live.
Assignment Availability
While it is important to set a due date for any Assignments, you can also select a time and/or date range for when an Assignment is available for students to complete. This means that even if an Assignment is published, students will not be able to access it until the Availability date has passed.
➜ Giving an Assignment a due date does not mean that it will automatically lock after the due date has passed. If you want an Assignment to close after a specific date and time, set the “Until” field under the Availability Dates section.
