The Canvas Calendar
The Calendar in Canvas is a global feature, meaning users can see all courses’ assignments and events in one place. The Calendar spans all courses and displays information for each of your enrolled courses and groups. In the navigation bar, you can choose to view the calendar in Week, Month, or Agenda view. The view you choose dictates the style of the calendar window. By default, the calendar appears in Month view.
Each calendar view shows any assignments, events, or to-do items that have been added to the calendar. Events can be added at any time in the navigation bar by clicking the Add button. Instructors can add assignments and course events and all users can add personal events. Add course events to remind students of assignments that do not have official due dates, to break up larger assignments before an official due date, or when wanting a separate due date for a discussion post and requiring replies.
➜ If your institution is using the Scheduler tool, you can also create Scheduler appointment groups.
Use the Canvas Calendar for all time sensitive reminders and due dates, regardless of how students are completing or submitting the assignment. This gives students a central resource for your course.
Calendar Filters
By default, the Calendar displays your personal calendar and course calendars for each class in which you are enrolled. However, you can filter which calendars display, including group and course calendars as well as your personal calendar. In order to filter your Calendar by courses or groups, click the color box next to the Calendar. The calendar can show up to 10 courses and/or groups at a time. Select the square in front of the course name to enable the ability to see course dates.
Canvas will assign an arbitrary color for each calendar unless a custom color is chosen. Each calendar contains 15 default colors, but you can create any color of your choice by selecting the More icon and inserting a Hex code of your choosing.
Trainer Tip! When you’re working on course planning, turn off all of your other course and group calendars. Only turn on the course that you’re working on. Not only will this reduce visual clutter, it will speed up your ability to create new events and assignments from the calendar, because the creation window will default to the first active calendar on your list.
